Bubbleion is a sculptural pavilion built in Istanbul Bilgi University’s Santralİstanbul Campus aiming to investigate material performance for the final project of Basic Design, Material System.
The motivation behind this project was to explore unique and innovative fabrication techniques with a hands-on approach and systematize making knowledge into a set of knowledge. After various material and production method experimentation we gained practical insight on dynamics of vault structure and set us the challenge to utilize fiberglass reinforced polyester resin (FRP) units in construction of the pavilion. Balloons in different sizes were chosen as negative mold to individual units. These units gained its shape on the balloon when polyester resin cured and resulted in a unibody sphere that can resist compression of other units. We utilized models on close-packing of spheres in order to approximate number of units and final results. FRP units were wrapped with nets, which then were tied together to build the macro-form on site.
