# Computing Stitches & Crocheting Geometry

Protoknit is a graduation project, which aims to explore and execute the craft of crochet through computation.

Development process of this project consists of two main stages: an analytical and systematic approach to crocheting three-dimensional objects to discover the underlying computational aspects, and a formal representation of the deducted computational logic in the form of a computer algorithm.

During the first stage, different materials, tools and techniques were systematically experimented in order to understand their effects on the process of crocheting three-dimensional objects. These experimentations and comparative analyses result in set of rules and relations determining geometric properties of the crocheted pieces. These set of rules were then used in the development of a computer algorithm, aiming to generate crochet patterns out of three-dimensional objects that are modeled in a CAD software. Constraints and opportunities discovered in the first stage constituted variables of the algorithm, including determinate variables such as the material properties (yarn weight) and the tool size (crochet hook); and indeterminate variables such as the effect of the crafter’s hand (grip on the yarn) while producing stitches. Additionally, during this phase, several workshops were conducted with groups of different experience levels in both computation and crocheting, in order to gain further insights on computational variables of crocheting as well as to test validity of the algorithm.

The output of the developed computer algorithm is a crochet pattern that offers materialization of the digital simulation by hand. The overall process is thus a transition from the digital simulation to the physical object, where physical variables continuously inform the algorithm and shape the outcome.
