Cliché is a lighting unit, which was consulted and manufactured by master craftsmen during our apprenticeship in Murat Pantograf, Şişhane.
Throughout our apprenticeship duration, we listened to stories of various masters of the neighborhood, had chance to use and experience manual machinery and learn production techniques that are rarely used nowadays. One of the techniques that we observed was modular stencil system -cliché- used to paint letters on military equipment, which was introduced to Turkish military forces with American Marshall Plan, aid then remanufactured by Turkish craftsmen. The modularity of this system of stencils rose our curiosity.
The project utilizes the modularity of brass stencils that consists of one male and one female side that slide on top of the other. This technique and tools were implemented on basic geodesic geometry with triangulated modules, which allows growth and manipulation of the geodesic structure as well as flat packing opportunity of a lightweight dome.
